Lagos to Host Africa’s First-Ever Electric Powerboat Race in 2025
Lagos State is set to make history
this October as it becomes the first African city to host the prestigious E1
Championship — a global all-electric powerboat racing series. Governor Babajide
Sanwo-Olu shared the exciting news via his official X account following a visit
to Monaco, where he witnessed the championship firsthand.
During his statement, Governor
Sanwo-Olu expressed his enthusiasm:
"This weekend, we experienced the E1 Championship in Monaco — a
powerful showcase of how bold ideas, innovation, and resilience can shape the
future of sports and sustainability."
Scheduled for October 4th and 5th,
2025, the E1 World Championship is not just another sporting event. It's the
world’s first electric raceboat competition, designed to champion clean energy,
eco-friendly water transportation, and marine technology. Known for its sleek
"RaceBird" boats, the series blends high-speed excitement with a
strong message about environmental responsibility.
With Lagos added to the elite list
of host cities — including Monaco, Venice, Jeddah, and Rotterdam — the city
strengthens its reputation as a forward-thinking, global hub for green
innovation and urban development.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the significance
of this development:
"Lagos being the first African host of the E1 Championship is a
landmark achievement — not just for the sport, but for what it represents.
We’re stepping onto the world stage, showing our readiness to be part of global
discussions around sustainability, clean energy, and next-generation
transport."
Preparations for the event are
expected to kick off soon, with plans for coastal infrastructure, safety
measures, and local community involvement. The race will be broadcast internationally
and is expected to attract thousands of fans, tourists, and stakeholders.
Sanwo-Olu concluded with a hopeful
message:
"We are bringing a world-class event to our shores. This is a new
chapter for Lagos, and I’m excited for the world to see the incredible energy
and spirit of our city."
This announcement follows another
historic milestone for Lagos — the recent hosting of Nigeria’s first-ever international
Archery competition.
